The Cosmic Microwave Background and Earth's Core-Mantle Boundary: A Tale of Two CMBs

چکیده

The published uncertainties of estimates of cosmic microwave background (CMB) heterogeneity based on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) differential microwave radiometer (DMR) experiment are much too small: they neglect a systematic modelling error that can exceed the estimates. The same systematic modelling error pervades images of the topography of Earth's core-mantle boundary (also called the CMB) from earthquake travel-time data. In both problems, parametric models (truncated spherical harmonic expansions and/or pixel representations) have been fit by least-squares to noisy, unevenly distributed data on the sphere. The part of the "true" CMB that can not be expressed in the parametric representation gives rise to a systematic error that is formally infinite, unless additional constraints beyond the data are imposed. Even with optimistic assumptions about the neglected terms, the total uncertainty is comparable to the published structure. Inferences about individual spherical harmonic coefficients, about overall spectral shapes, and about pointwise values are all affected.

Global Elastic Response Simulation

We pursue accurate numerical techniques to obtain theoretical seismic waves for realistic three dimensional (3-D) Earth models using Spectral-Element Method. We have tried to solve forward problem, that is, to calculate synthetic seismic waveform for fully 3-D Earth model. We introduce a heterogeneous region at Earth's core-mantle boundary by combining a small, strongly anomalous region to a la...

Strong, Multi-Scale Heterogeneity in Earth's Lowermost Mantle.

The core mantle boundary (CMB) separates Earth's liquid iron outer core from the solid but slowly convecting mantle. The detailed structure and dynamics of the mantle within ~300 km of this interface remain enigmatic: it is a complex region, which exhibits thermal, compositional and phase-related heterogeneity, isolated pockets of partial melt and strong variations in seismic velocity and aniso...

Imaging paleoslabs in the D″ layer beneath Central America and the Caribbean using seismic waveform inversion

D″ (Dee double prime), the lowermost layer of the Earth's mantle, is the thermal boundary layer (TBL) of mantle convection immediately above the Earth's liquid outer core. As the origin of upwelling of hot material and the destination of paleoslabs (downwelling cold slab remnants), D″ plays a major role in the Earth's evolution. D″ beneath Central America and the Caribbean is of particular geod...

Density structure of Earth's lowermost mantle from Stoneley mode splitting observations

Advances in our understanding of Earth's thermal evolution and the style of mantle convection rely on robust seismological constraints on lateral variations of density. The large-low-shear-wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs) atop the core-mantle boundary beneath Africa and the Pacific are the largest structures in the lower mantle, and hence severely affect the convective flow. Here, we show that ...

Seismostratigraphy and thermal structure of Earth's core-mantle boundary region.

We used three-dimensional inverse scattering of core-reflected shear waves for large-scale, high-resolution exploration of Earth's deep interior (D'') and detected multiple, piecewise continuous interfaces in the lowermost layer (D'') beneath Central and North America. With thermodynamic properties of phase transitions in mantle silicates, we interpret the images and estimate in situ temperatur...
